Lycopene and Prostate Health

There has been much written in the medical literature about lycopene’s beneficial effects on the body as a potent antioxidant and scavenger of free radicals.  Antioxidants are those substances that essentially neutralize the damaging effects of these free radicals.  One of the most potent antioxidants in nature is lycopene, a carotenoid derived from tomatoes. 

One topic that has gained particular attention in both the press and medical literature is the possible beneficial effect of lycopene on men’s health.   
     Clinical studies have shown that lycopene may reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Others have demonstrated natural lycopene’s ability to kill twice the number of tumor cells than synthetic lycopene under laboratory conditions.  Lycopene may also prevent the formation certain types of skin cancer and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease like heart attack and stroke.
