Basic Skin Care for African American Skin

Whether your skin is dry, oily, combination or sensitive, you need to take special precautions to protect it against certain problems. African American skin tends to be prone to issues such as scarring, pitting and hyperpigmentation. Products that are specially formulated for your skin’s special needs, such as Lycopene cream, and the right routine can keep you glowing and gorgeous for many years to come.

Scrub-a-Dub-Dub

Any good skin care routine should have at its base a gentle, water-soluble cleanser. Avoid those drying bar soaps that can strip natural oils and leave your skin looking ashy or feeling tight and itchy. Look instead for a moisturizing, non-comedogenic cleanser that will clean without stripping, and choose one that is formulated for your skin type. If you have oily or combination skin, you need a gel-based cleanser. If your skin is aging or dry, a lotion or cream-based cleanser would be a better option.

Periodically, you’ll want to exfoliate to remove dead skin that can leave a gray or ashy cast to your face. A gentle scrub will expose fresh, new skin and leave your face feeling clean and supple rather than irritated or sore. Gentle, natural scrubs with jojoba are great choices.

Moisturize and Protect

After washing your face, use a moisturizer to seal moisture into your skin. The right lotion or cream will hydrate your skin and provide a smooth surface over which your makeup will glide rather than tug and wrinkle. After you moisturize, apply a sunscreen. While your skin has more pigment to protect it from sun damage, it is not impervious to UVA/UVB rays. Applying sunscreen will protect you from premature signs of aging and skin cancer.

Specialize

Add a specialty skin care treatment to address any specific skin care issues you have. Lycopene cream is a great option for African American skin. Lycopene is a tomato extract that has been found to have powerful antioxidant and anti-aging properties. Concentrated lycopene skin creams can be formulated to target problem areas. When combined with hyaluronic acid, they offer long-lasting, powerful hydration to dry, irritated skin and plump fine lines. When combined with nonanedioic acids, or licorice extracts, it can erase dark spots and hyperpigmented areas. It can even be combined with special flower extracts to smooth wrinkles and give your face a softer, more youthful look.

With the right products and routines, your skin will be looking its best in no time.
